A better bus service would help both residents and visitors (not everyone drives),and most "events" are held on weekends or bank holidays. A bus service could reduce the need for parking space (perhaps a "park 'n ride") and increase safety in the main town/trading area!
Thanks Mike. You will be glad to know the transport issues you raise are very much under consideration and have been raised by us with staff at SCDC and SCC. We will be holding a public meeting with transport as the focus in September and dates will be advertised here on the website and around town. Thanks for your input
Could we consider residents parking (one per council tax payment) with visitor vouchers restricted to houses not for rent. Locations currently unmarked could be brought into the scheme and with a better bus service from Saxmundham we might find a way to tackle the parking problem in the high season.
Thanks Paula - you may not be surprised to know that a residents parking scheme has come up several times and we have discussed this with relevant traffic authorities at SCC. Also bus times, frequency and routes have been discussed and we are looking into the feasibility of a hopper bus or similar for the town - more to follow when the questionnaire results are known.
I know from my time on the Town Council that Residents 'Parking Permits have been discussed. Some of the problems identified included the cost of administering the scheme. The fact that the area around the High Street/King Street/Crabbe street is there are more houses than there is parking spaces so having a permit would still not guarantee you a parking space. The scheme wouldn't work unless enforced and the local Police and PCSO struggle with policing the area at the moment, to constantly monitor residents' parking would add a great deal to their workload. The other problem is that people do not expect to park and then walk any distance. This is evident if you watch people driving to the Fish and Chip shop. People both drive and park in truly astounding ways to ensure they don't have to walk from than 5 yards. Park and Ride is a good idea but only really for day visitors. People who are staying will want to have their cars nearby to unload luggage, shopping and children. If only we could re-open the railway line!
With such a deplorable bus service I'm surprised there isn't a local rail preservation society!
The lack of parking in the town, and all the litter and rubbish in the summer months.may-be the take away outlets should pay more rates for the cost of clearing this up,it ruins the town at times, and it smells, and is unsightly,may-be these establishments could introduce a good house delivery system, this would be a great help to us all, also its lack of power with s.c.d.c.
